1. What do they want?
The first step to finding your target audience is to ask yourself what you want them to do. Do you want them to buy something? Or do you just want them to sign up for your newsletter? Once you know what you want them to accomplish, you can start looking at who they are and how they interact with others.
2. Who are they?
Once you have identified what you want them to achieve, you need to figure out who they are. You may think that everyone wants to get rich quick, but that’s not true. People are different and have different motivations. If you’re selling a product, then you’ll probably want to look at demographics like age, gender, income level, etc. If you’re selling services, you’ll want to look at things like education, occupation, and location.
3. How do they interact?
Now that you’ve figured out who they are, you need to understand how they interact with others online. Are they active on social media? Do they use forums? Do they read blogs? These questions help you determine where your ideal customer hangs out online.
4. Where do they hang out?
You now know who your customers are and how they interact, so you need to figure out where they hang out. Is it Facebook? Twitter? Instagram? Pinterest? Snapchat? YouTube? LinkedIn? Forums? Blogs? All these places have their own unique audiences, so you need to decide which ones best fit your business.
5. What content do they consume?
After you’ve determined where your customers hang out, you need to figure what kind of content they consume. Are they reading articles? Watching videos? Listening to podcasts? Reading books? There are many ways people consume information, so you need to choose the right channels for your business.
6. What type of content do they consume?
This is the final piece of the puzzle. After you’ve chosen where your customers hang out and what they consume, you need to figure which type of content they prefer. Are they interested in long-form content? Short-form content? Videos? Infographics? Podcasts? Articles? Whatever your customers’ preferences are, make sure you cater to those needs.
